Open Play Guidelines for Saturday

Welcome to open play! These guidelines are designed to keep table tennis sessions organized, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Please follow the table layout, rotation process, practice rules, and etiquette expectations below.  We thrive on great sportsmanship! If a player repeatedly disregards these guidelines or disrupts the positive environment, they may be asked to take a short break from play, or face temporary or permanent suspension from the center.

🏢 Table Layout and Skill Levels

  • Tables near the bleachers: Reserved primarily for doubles play. During peak times, additional tables may be converted to doubles to accommodate more players.
  • Opposite-side tables: Reserved primarily for singles play.
  • Tables near the windows: Intended for advanced matches.
  • Personal belongings: Keep bags and other personal items away from under the tables.

🔄 Rotation System

  • Queue up: Place your magnetic name tag on the end of the table that matches your skill level. Please line them up from left to right (with the leftmost tag indicating who is up next to play).  For doubles, find a partner first, then place both name tags together.
  • Balance wait times: Try to keep wait times even across all available tables.
  • Remove your name tag when playing: Once you are on the table, please take your name tag off.

Up-and-Down Match Flow

  • If you win one or two matches: Move up one table to challenge yourself against higher-skilled players.
  • If you lose one or two matches: Move down one table to reset and find your rhythm.

🏋️ Practice Tables Near the Weight Room

  • Two dedicated practice tables with full barriers are available near the weight room. Please follow the rules below so practice remains fair, safe, and accessible to everyone.  During peak times, practice tables may be converted to doubles to accommodate more players.

⏱️ 20-Minute Practice Limit

  • Start the timer as soon as you step up to a practice table. When your 20 minutes are up, please step down immediately so the next players in line can take their turn.

⚠️ Safety First: Ball Limits

To prevent tripping hazards and keep the floor clear, please follow these ball limits:

  • Standard practice: Use one ball for two-player practice, or a maximum of two balls for four-player cross-table practice.
  • Multi-ball practice: Multi-ball practicing is allowed only when players can immediately retrieve any stray balls that leave the barrier area.

Table Tennis Etiquette and Sportsmanship

Court & Match Courtesy

  • Retrieve Stray Balls: Assist with balls that roll into or behind your area.
  • Respect Active Points: Never walk behind an active table or stand nearby to chat while a point is in progress. Wait until the rally finishes before crossing or retrieving a ball.
  • Mind Your Own Match: Do not call a “Let” or interfere with calls and scoring on adjacent tables. Let neighboring players handle their own games.
  • Announce the Score: The server is responsible for clearly calling out the score before serving, stating the server’s score first to avoid any confusion.

Gameplay & Traditions

  • Serve Legally: Ensure your serves are completely legal by tossing the ball near-vertically at least 6 inches from a stationary open palm. Do not hide the ball with your body or arm after the toss.
  • The “Net/Edge” Apology: If you win a point due to a lucky net clip or an unpredictable edge ball, it is customary to raise your index finger or an open hand toward your opponent and offer a quick, brief apology.
  • The 10-0 Tradition: Historically, reaching a 10-0 lead meant purposefully missing a point to spare the opponent an 11-0 “skunk.” Today, this custom is fading; many competitive players consider a fake missed point more insulting than simply finishing the game naturally.
  • End with Respect: Always close out a match with a polite handshake or a friendly fist bump.

Equipment & Environment Care

  • Don’t Touch the Rubber: When inspecting an opponent’s racket before a match (which is entirely legal to check the surface type), never rub or touch the active playing area. The natural oils from your skin can permanently degrade the rubber’s grip. Only touch the very bottom of the surface near the handle label if absolutely necessary.
  • Keep the Ball & Surface Dry: Always check that the ball is free of sweat before serving. If a long rally leaves sweat droplets on the playing surface, use a towel to dry the table immediately.
  • Respect the Gear: Never slam your paddle on the table, throw your equipment, or kick the barriers.
  • Set Up and Clean Up: Help with setting up and taking down tables, and ensure your trash and bottles are thrown away. Note: A minimum of 2 people are required to safely unfold or close a table.

Player Conduct & Apparel

  • Avoid Delaying Tactics: Keep the game moving. Do not excessively towel off, stall, or delay the pace between points.
  • Maintain Sportsmanship: Refrain from trash talk, offensive language, obscene gestures, or unsolicited criticism.
  • Proper Attire: Wear comfortable athletic clothing (avoid white shirts, as they make the ball difficult to track) and only wear non-marking shoes in the gym.
