How the Doubles Pairing System Works:

For this event, players were allowed to choose their own partners. Out of the 36 total participants, 24 players entered as pre-formed teams, leaving 12 individual players to be paired up automatically using our rating system.

To ensure balanced and competitive matches, the system used a “snake-style” seeding process to pair up the remaining 12 players:

  1. Group Sorting: The 12 individual players were sorted by rating and divided into three sections of four players each (Section 1: Highest Ratings, Section 2: Middle Ratings, Section 3: Lowest Ratings).
  2. The Pairing Logic: Within each section, the system paired the highest-ranked seed with the lowest-ranked seed, and the second-highest seed with the third-highest seed.

Pairing Breakdown by Section:

  • Seed 1 pairs with Seed 4
  • Seed 2 pairs with Seed 3

(This identical logic was applied across all three sections to create six balanced doubles teams).

How the Divisions (Avocado, Banana, & Cherry) were Formed

Ever wonder how your team ended up in your division? It all comes down to the math!

The system took the combined rating of both players on each team and sorted all 18 teams from highest to lowest. From there, the teams were split into three balanced divisions:

  • 🥑 Division Avocado: Top 6 teams with the highest combined ratings.
  • 🍌 Division Banana: Middle 6 teams.
  • 🍒 Division Cherry: Bottom 6 teams with the lowest combined ratings.

The Strategic Twist: As you might have guessed, simply pairing up with the strongest player you can find isn’t always an automatic advantage! Doing so bumps up your combined rating, which could land your team at the very bottom seed of a tougher division. On the flip side, being a top seed within a division gives you a slight competitive edge to win it all.

Because the final cutoff depends entirely on who registers, it is impossible to predict exactly which division your team will fall into until the brackets are set!

Above is the doubles sign-up sheet along with everyone’s entry ratings.

Quick Guide to the Labels:

“sub” (Substitute): Ava stepped in at the very last minute to substitute for Scott. Poor Scott got turned around on the road for 90 minutes and just couldn’t track down the Dula gym on Saturday! Huge thanks to Ava for saving the day.

“p” (Prearranged): Indicates teams that signed up together.
